Campbell started his career with Renton F.C. in 1888. He got a chance of a trial for the Scottish national team in 1890, but didn’t get capped due to established players returning to the squad.
In 1890, he signed for Aston Villa (Legacy No. 72.) A popular member of the “Villans” team, he became club captain, as he had been with Renton. One of his treasured possessions came from his time with the club, when he was gifted it a gold watch and badge.
He came back north and joined the newly formed Dundee F.C., “the club being in need of an experienced man to captain their newly formed team.” He made his debut on 4th November 1894, in a 3-1 defeat at Celtic Park, and strangely, played his final match for Dundee, against Celtic, at Celtic Park on 4th May 1895, which Dundee lost, 2-1.
As well as being a talented footballer, George was also well known for his bass voice, and sung in choirs and on stage.
Due to ill health, George was forced to retire from football at the end of the 1894-95 season. He moved to Kirkcaldy, unfortunately succumbed to his illness, and died on 4th April 1898.
