Born in Wolverhampton, George started his career in the Midlands Junior League with Bloxwich All Saints in 1920. He then played for Talbot-Stead Tube Works, Darlaston, and Broxwich Strollers. He then joined Walsall in 1925, before spending a season with non-league Burton Town. He returned to league football with Merthyr Town in 1927.
George signed for Dundee F.C. in February 1928.
His first game for the Dark Blues was against Dundee United, in the second round of the Scottish Cup. He scored, and was instrumental in the build up to Dundee’s other goals, the match ended 3-3. Dundee winning the replay 1-0.
He became a regular in the team after that, forming a successful partnership with Frank Townrow. George made fifteen appearances in the 1927 -28 season. Twelve in the League, and three in the Scottish Cup, he scored two goals.
During the close season, he contracted a “severe illness”.
He struggled to regain full fitness when the new season started. However, he made twenty-seven appearances, twenty-two in the League, five in the Scottish Cup, and scored four goals. One of the goals was in the second round of the Scottish Cup, like the previous year it was against Dundee United. Ending 1-1, it required a replay, the same as the previous season, which Dundee won 1-0.
Although offered terms for season 1929-1930, he asked to be put on the transfer list, hoping for a return to England. His wish was granted and Sunderland signed him in May 1929. He moved from Roker Park to Swindon Town in 1931, after which he returned to non-league football, retiring in 1936.
