Biography

Ivor Smith was born in Aberdeen, and had played for St Clements’ F.C., a juvenile team in the city. He signed for Aberdeen F.C. after returning from Korea in October 1952, where he had served with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.

Freed by the Dons at the end of season 1954-55, and soon to be demobbed from the Army, he became a Dundee F.C. player in early May 1955. He was in the team to play against Forfar in the semi-final of the Forfarshire Cup, within days of signing.

Ivor played in the League Cup (Group 1) match against Airdrie on 13th August, which they lost 0-4, before playing in the “A” team. He made his first team debut against Clyde, at Dens on 1st October. A match they won 2-1.

It was in the “A” team that he excelled, scoring goals a plenty. The step up to the first team seemed a bit harder to maintain. He made his last first team appearance on 21st January 1956 when Dundee lost 4-1 to Clyde.

At the end of season he was freed by the Dens Park committee, and made the move to Highland League team, Buckie Thistle, in June 1957. From there he went to Keith F.C., playing at Kynoch Park until 1967, when he was given a benefit match against Arbroath, who were managed by former Dee, Albert Henderson.

Whilst playing part-time football, Ivor worked as a fish porter in Aberdeen

Ivor died on 11th October 2010 in Aberdeen. aged 77.
