When Joe signed for Dundee on 19th August 1926, he was already a well established player at both club and international level. He started his career with junior club Vale of Clyde in 1911, before joining Celtic a week after his 16th birthday in 1912.
With the start of WW1 and the cessation of football, Joe joined the 1/7th Black Watch. Private Cassidy was wounded and gassed several times. In November 1918 he was awarded the Military Medal.
At the end of the war Joe returned to Parkhead where he remained until 1924, when he transferred to Bolton Wanderers. The following season he made the move to Cardiff City, before returning to Scotland and joining Dundee, on 19th August 1926.
Joe’s arrival at Dens saw Sam Irving heading in the other direction. Cardiff had been keen to sign Irving, and Cassidy had been placed on the transfer list (at his own request for health reasons), so a swap deal was completed. He spent two seasons with the Dark Blues before transferring to Clyde. It had been reported that a fee of £500 had been placed on him. During his time at the club he scored eleven goals in fifty seven appearances.
He moved to Ireland, playing for Balymena and Dundalk. Returning to Scotland in 1932 he finished his career with Morton.
A much travelled player Joe’ s first four children were born in Scotland, England, Wales & Ireland.
He gained four caps for Scotland, in 1921, 1923 & 1924 playing twice for Wales & Northern Ireland.
Joe died in July 1949, aged 52 years.
