John joined Dundee from junior team Newarthill Hearts in November 1936, at the young age of 17, and made his debut against Celtic in a 2-1 defeat on 27th February 1937. He made four first team appearances in season 1936/37. The following season he made 33 appearances and scored three goals.

Laurie enlisted at the start of WW2, rising to the rank of Major. He managed to maintain his football career, whilst based on the west coast. Partick Thistle made a request to be able to play him in 1941, and by May he had moved on to Motherwell. As he moved around the country he played in regimental & command teams as well as for Sunderland. Latterly Newcastle United were also keen to have him play for them.

Major Laurie was due to be demobbed towards the end of 1945. He asked to be put on the transfer list, as he wished to return to his job as a surveyor in Glasgow. He made two appearances in 1944/45, and two appearances,  scoring one goal, in 1945/46.

He signed for Glasgow Rangers in April 1946, and moved on to Queen of the South in 1947.
