Born in 1878, Tom started his football career with Lochee United, a junior club in Dundee. He joined Dundee F.C. in 1896.
On October 12th , 1896, Dundee played Sunderland on what had become their “annual visit.” Jack Hillman the regular first choice keeper was injured, which allowed Tom to make his first appearance at Carolina Port, whilst still officially a Lochee United player. The match, watched by just under 4,000 spectators, ended 1-1.
After joining Dundee F.C. he became the reserve team keeper, and understudy to Jack Hillman.
He made only one first team appearance in 1897-98, but gradually gained his place, making fifteen appearances in 1898-99, twenty in 1899-00, and twenty three in 1900-01. 1901-02 saw him play only one game, due to injury, and ill health. He was replaced by Arthur Howes, who had previously been with Leicester Fosse.
Tom was gifted a benefit match versus Celtic, which was played on 29th August, 1901. Dundee lost 1-0 in front of a crowd of nearly 3,000.
A move to England in 1902, saw Tom become a Barrow A.F.C. player. The team had been formed the previous year, and played competitive football in the Lancashire League. He quickly became a favourite with Directors, players and supporters, and was appointed club captain. He also had the opportunity of work in the town outside of football.
After four years at Barrow, Tom joined Workinton A.F.C. for the 1906-07 season, where he remained until moving back to Scotland in 1909 signing for Brechin City.
